Roundtable Meeting with Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Journalists

GPoT, in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation - Turkey, organized the 6th Round of the Heybeliada Talks between the 26th and 28th of February in Istanbul bringing together a select number of politicians, journalists and opinion makers from both sides of Cyprus as well as Greece and Turkey.

As part of the 2-day dialogue, for the first time since the beginning of the Cyprus problem, a Turkish Prime Minister spoke directly to the Greek Cypriots. Bringing the participants together with the Turkish Prime Minister Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Mr. Egemen Bağış provided the participants with the historic opportunity to talk to Turkish dignitaries face to face and later transmit their messages to their respective communities. 

The round table talks covered the current situation in Cyprus, the stumbling blocks in the negotiation process, as well as the perspective of the media. Among the issues underlined were the approaching Turkish Cypriot elections, the reasons the Annan Plan could not be universally accepted, the importance of getting the message of unification across to public opinion, and the role of the media in this process.

“Kıbrıslı Rum ve Türk gazeteciler ile yuvarlak masa toplantısı

Küresel Siyasal Eğilimler Merkezi’nin (GPoT), Friedrich Naumann Vakfı’nın işbirliği ile düzenlediği Kıbrıs Görüşmeleri’nin 6.’sını 26-28 Şubat tarihlerinde İstanbul’da gerçekleşti.

Toplantı Kıbrıs’ın Türk ve Rum kesimleri ve Yunanistan’dan sayılı siyasetçi, gazeteci ve kanaat önderini bir araya getirdi.
2 gün süren görüşmelerin bir parçası olarak, Kıbrıs meselesinin başından bu yana ilk kez bir Türk Başbakan Güney Kıbrıslılar ile birebir görüştü. Başbakan Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ve Devlet Bakanı ve Başmüzakereci Egemen Bağış ile bir araya gelen katılımcılar, en yüksek mevkideki Türkiyeli siyasetçilerle yüzyüze konuşarak buradan aldıkları mesajları kendi halklarına aktarma fırsatını buldular.
Yuvarlak masa görüşmelerinde ise Kıbrıs’ın bugünkü durumu, müzakere sürecinde ortaya çıkan engeller ve medyanın perspektifi masaya yatırıldı. Altı çizilen hususlar arasında Nisan 2010’da KKTC’de yapılacak seçimler, Annan Planı’nın başarılı olamamasının ardında yatan sebepler, siyaset yapıcı kademelerin kamuoyunu bilgilendirmesi ve medyanın tüm bu süreçlerdeki rolü vardı.
