Introductory Workshop on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament

GPoT Center, in partnership with the Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies (EDAM), organized a three-day introductory workshop on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament with the participation of 20 international experts, journalists, and representatives of civil society between the 10th and 12th of October, 2012.

The objective of the workshop was to raise awareness about the issues of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament in Turkey. In the first session of the first day, George Perkovich, Director of the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for the International Peace, discussed why states want nuclear weapons. In the second session, Mustafa Kibaroğlu, Director at the Center for Eurasian Studies of Okan University, and Pierre Goldschmidt and Togzhan Kassenova, Senior Associates at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, talked about the governance of the nuclear world. During the third session, Nilvana Darama, Deputy Director General for the OSCE Arms Control and Disarmament, spoke about Turkey’s non-proliferation policies while Sinan Ülgen, Director of EDAM, addressed Turkish perceptions on nuclear deterrence.

In the first session of the second day, Aaron Stein, from EDAM, discussed non-proliferation resources. During the second session, Nurşin Ateşoğlu Güney, from Yıldız Technical University, and George Perkovich focused on Turkey and its relations with Iran and the US in the context of nuclear proliferation. Ending the workshop, Sinan Ülgen and Mensur Akgün, Director of GPoT Center, provided concluding remarks.
