9th Round of the Heybeliada Talks

The series of second-track diplomacy meetings providing the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots with a special opportunity to discuss issues related to the Cyprus question in parallel with the official negotiations between the two Cypriot leaders was organized by GPoT Center for the ninth time between January 22nd and 23rd, 2011.

In addition to the regular participants representing Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot academia, civil society, community of political experts as well as current and former members of the negotiating teams, Mr. Andros Kyprianou, the general secretary of AKEL (Progressive Party for the Working People) joined this round of talks and delivered a key-note speech.

The participants discussed, in detail, some of the main obstacles hindering progress in the official negotiations and proposed specific recommendations on how to contribute to a breakthrough. The recommendations together with the main outcomes of the nine rounds of the Heybeliada talks will be communicated to the political and opinion leaders as well as to the wider public via a final report, which is scheduled for publication in February of 2011.

GPoT Center would like to express its thanks to the Open Society Foundation (Turkey) for the financial support which enabled organization of the last two rounds and publication of the report. We would also like to thank the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung for their continuous support.
