Boğaziçi University Department of Western Languages and Literatures hosted the “Undergraduate Conference of Western Languages and Literatures” themed “Extinction” on November 23,2024. In the conference, where 33 students from 16 universities made their oral presentations, 9 of our students from the Department of English Language and Literature successfully represented our university. In the conference, where the theme of “extinction” was examined in many areas from natural calamities to artificial intelligence, from the loss of morality to loss of languages, our 9 undergraduate students analysed the examples of “extinction” in literature and cinema, and made their presentation on various subjects such as the extinction of species, national identities, nature and humanity in 7 different sessions. In the “Post-Colonial Literature” session of the conference, which was held simultaneously in Demir Demirgil and Özger Arnas halls, two of our third-year undergraduate students made their presentations. Ecenur Özlü presented her paper titled “‘A Dreary Night in November’: Extinction of Scottish Identity and Individualism in Liz Lochhead’s Blood and Ice” and Gülşen Yılgör presented her paper titled “The Extinction of Identity and Cultural Heritage in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe”. In the second session of the conference, our third-year student İrem Korkmazer presented her paper titled “Examining Emotional Extinction: The Effect of the Male Gaze on Emotional Expression Through John Donne’s ‘The Flea’”. In the other session, Our fourth-year student Sude Aksoy presented her paper titled “Dissecting the Moral and Ethical Extinction in Percy B. Shelley’s ‘The Masque of Anarchy’” and our third-year student Emre Çepni presented his paper titled “Extinction of American Morality in Charles Bukowski’s Post Office”. In the afternoon sessions, our third-year student Göksu Şimşek presented her paper titled “The Extinction of Morality in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray: Aestheticism and the Loss of the Inner Self”, our fourth-year student Selin Kuru presented her paper titled “The Danger of the Extinction of Humanity in Shaun of the Dead”, our fourth-year student Kenan Sunal presented his paper titled “The Modern Sisyphus: Extinction of Personal Meaning and Nature” and our fourth-year student Hüma Aydın presented her paper titled “The Road to Extinction: Environmental Collapse and Extinction in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road”.
