Istanbul Kültür University Penal Law Application and Research Center (CEHAMER) organised the ‘International Academy of Human Rights 23rd Summer Workshop’ between October 7-12, 2024, at Kuşadası Richmond Ephesus Hotel.

The event was chaired by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Bahri Öztürk, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Director of CEHAMER, and Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Helmut Goerlich, and honoured with the attendance of Mr. Ralf Schröer, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Izmir, and Mr. Niyazi Acar, Deputy Minister of Justice.

The event was held with the participation of numerous experts in their fields, including Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Gerhard Dannecker, Prof. Dr. Durmuş Tezcan, Prof. DDDr. DDr. h.c. Dieter G. Kindel, Prof. Dr. Prof. h.c. Arndt Sinn, Prof. Dr. Ákos Farkas, Prof. Dr. Judit Jacsó, Prof. Dr. Stephanie Schiedermair, Prof. Dr. iur. Dipl. Psych. Stefanie Kemme, Prof. Dr. Judit Barta, and Prof. Dr. Ali Rıza Töngür.

The academic organisation of the event, which brought together academics, practitioners, and students, was carried out by our Faculty of Law faculty members and CEHAMER members, Assist. Prof. Efser Erden Tütüncü, Assist. Prof. Muharrem Tütüncü, Lecturer Dr. Nilüfer Köker, LL.M and Dr. Akif Hilal Öztürk. The administrative processes of the organisation were followed by our Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law, Assist. Prof. Tuğçe Karaçoban Güneş, and Faculty Secretaries Fadime Ayşegül Akşehirlioğlu and Aleyna Çalışkan.

Istanbul Kültür University Art Gallery (IKUSAG) opened its 2024-2025 season with Yevgeni Lansere's exhibition “Türkiye of Liberation: Ankara Summer 1922.” The opening of the exhibition, organized in collaboration with Cumhuriyet Newspaper, was held on Wednesday, October 16 at 15:00 in the IKUSAG Exhibition Hall in the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy campus.

The exhibition, whose opening speeches were delivered by Undersecretary of the Russian Embassy Assoc. Prof. Aleksandr Sotniçenko, Secretary General of Cumhuriyet Foundation & Writer Işık Kansu, and our Rector Prof. Dr. Fadime Üney Yüksektepe, gives important messages about the 100th anniversary of the Republic and the cultural heritage left to new generations.   

The exhibition highlights Russian artist Yevgeni Lansere’s impressions and artistic sensitivity during his time in Anatolia. In his works reflecting the period he lived in Ankara in 1922, he portrays the National Forces of the period, the city’s daily life, crowded markets, and historical sites, primarily through portraits of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Halide Edip Adıvar, and Fatma Çavuş.

In addition to Lansere’s black and white drawings, the exhibition also featured versions colored with artificial intelligence by artist Sergey Golovachyev.

Through this unique exhibition, you can witness Liberation’s Türkiye through Lansere’s eyes at the IKUSAG Exhibition Hall until November 22, 2024.

The Head of the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema, Assoc. Prof. Perihan Taş Öz, announced the final declaration with actor Mehmet Aslantuğ at the closing meeting of the “Cinema Workshop,” held between October 9-12, as part of the International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival.

On October 12, 2024, at the closing meeting, which included the participation of academics, professional organizations, unions, federations, ministry representatives, directors, producers, and screenwriters, the final declaration, prepared as a result of discussions on the nine subject focuses addressed during the workshop, was shared.

This declaration aims to serve as a guide for the institutionalization of the cinema industry in Türkiye, addressing sector challenges, and strengthening relations between the industry’s components and academia.

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Çağla Gül Yesevi, Head of our Department of International Relations, spoke on Turkish Nationalism in the program “Gerçek Fikri Ne?” which was broadcast live on Habertürk TV on October 12, 2024, between 20.00-23.00, moderated by Eren Eğilmez.

The full-text paper titled “A Study on Family Businesses Started by Women Entrepreneurs as First Generation and Their Sustainability,” co-authored by Assist. Prof. İbrahim Ethem Tarhan from the Department of Industrial Engineering, was published in the Proceedings of the 10th Family Business Congress.

Prof. Dr. Akhan Akbulut, Head of our Department of Computer Engineering, gave a speech titled "Artificial Intelligence Revolution in Software Engineering" as an invited speaker at the "Software Developers Meetings Symposium" held at Istanbul Technical University on Thursday, October 17.

The summary of our professor's presentation is as follows:

"Today, the IT industry is undergoing a significant change as AI-powered assistants are becoming an integral part of software development processes. This approach allows developers using tools such as Google Copilot and Amazon CodeWhisperer to work faster and more streamlined, increasing productivity and efficiency. However, businesses that do not adopt AI-enabled workflows risk falling behind their competitors. Despite these benefits, there are also challenges, especially for IT managers. Since artificial intelligence itself cannot be considered a legal entity with property rights, current laws do not allow copyright protection of these generated software components. The resulting legal uncertainties surrounding AI-generated code are seen as a significant threat. Balancing these advantages and challenges is key to navigating this evolving landscape."

Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MOBIGEN) participated in the “TuPA International Proteomics Congress // 6th National Proteomics Congress” held at Kocaeli University, on October 11-12, 2024, with two poster presentations and one oral presentation.

In the congress, Assist. Prof. Pelin Özfiliz Kılbaş made an oral presentation titled “The Relationship Between FoxO3a and Lipid Metabolism in Breast Cancer,” while İlke Sarak, one of our postgraduate students, and Yiğit Efe Aydın, one of our alumni, presented their poster titled “Identification of the Interaction Between Foxo3a and Lipid Metabolism Proteins,” and Mustafa Atakan and Buket Özcan, our undergraduate students, presented their poster titled “The Effect of FoxO3a Overexpression on Breast Cancer Metabolism Through Orlistat Treatment.” We congratulate our professor and students for their participation in the congress and wish them continued success.

Our Vice President of the Department of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Assist. Prof. Nazife Özge Fercan's project titled "Evaluation of the Effects of Liquid Wastes that May Occur from Healthcare Institution Debris after the Possible Istanbul Earthquake in Terms of Environmental Geotechnics and Debris Removal Plans and Risk Analysis", in which she will serve as a researcher, has been awarded project support within the scope of the TÜBİTAK 1001-UDAP National Earthquake Research Program Joint Call.

T.R. Istanbul Kültür University Vocational School Director Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özer, Deputy Directors Lecturer Kerem Yücesan and Lecturer Gözde Kuzu, and Head of Program of Flight Operations Management, Lecturer Evren Yılmaz visited Ahmet Bolat, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Turkish Airlines (THY) in his office.

During the visit, opinions were discussed about strengthening the cooperation between our university and THY, the opportunities offered to students, and developments in the sector. In addition, student internship programs and graduate employment issues were also discussed. This meeting is aimed to contribute to the training of a qualified labour force in the aviation sector.

The IKU Cinema Club organized an "Open Air Cinema" event on Friday, October 4, in the front garden of the Bakırköy Campus, Ataköy building in order to provide students with a fun time. The event which started at 14.30 with the accompaniment of Orchestra IKU, continued with the performances of DJ Academy and IKU Dance Club. Then, a toy car giveaway was held through the Cinema Club Instagram account and gifts were given to the students. The movie started with the distribution of popcorn by the sponsor company. More than 500 students attended the event, which was held in a very pleasant atmosphere.

The short film “Station People,” directed and scripted by Res. Assist. Buğra Mert Alkayalar, a faculty member of the Radio, Television, and Cinema Department, won the second prize in the “Short Film” category of the TRT Future Communicators Competition, which is in its 10th year this year. The award ceremony of the competition, in which 180 people made it to the finals in 12 different categories, was held live on the TRT 2 channel at 20:00 on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.

Within the scope of the ‘Building Science II’ course conducted by Prof. Dr. Esin Kasapoğlu, one of our academicians from the Department of Architecture, a wall application training was given by Ytong company on Wednesday, October 16. As part of the training held in the backyard of the Ataköy building in the Bakırköy campus, company representatives made a sample wall structure using Ytong wall blocks.

The Department of Special Education organized an orientation program on Monday, September 23, from 12:00 to 14:00 to support the adaptation of first-year students, who started at our university in the 2024-2025 academic year, to the school and the department.

Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Vocational School organized "Ground Slot Tracking and Communication" trainings, approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, on Saturday, October 12, 2024. The trainings were conducted by Lecturer Evren Yılmaz, our Head of the Flight Operations Management Program. Participants had the opportunity to learn how to track ground slots, the importance of communication in air traffic management and effective communication strategies in potential crisis situations. In addition to theoretical knowledge, the training was supported by practical examples, enabling the participants to learn how to act in practice

Training and development dives were carried out by Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Underwater Club (IKUSAT) at Saroz Diving Center in Gelibolu Fındıklı Village Coal Port on October 12-13, 2024, with the participation of 6 graduates and 2 students under the guidance of club advisor Cemal Turan.

Members who received theoretical and sea training were awarded 1-star diver certification by reaching a depth of 18 meters in their last dive. In addition, the other 6 certified members also dived in Kömür Harbour for their development dives.

Lecturer Kerem Yücesan and Lecturer Gözde Kuzu, Assistant Principals of Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Vocational School, Lecturer Evren Yılmaz, Head of Flight Operations Management Program, and Lecturer Büşra Kaya, Head of Public Relations and Publicity Program, visited FUGO Ground Handling Services on Friday, October 11, and evaluated cooperation opportunities.

During the visit, where ideas were exchanged with the expert team of FUGO Ground Services, an environment was created to develop new strategies on advancements in the field of education, digital transformation and improvement of student experiences.

Prof. Dr. Arzu Özen, Head of the Department of Special Education, will take part as a panelist in the panel titled “Building Bridges Between Research and Practice” at the “34th National Special Education Congress” to be held at Ankara University between October 23-26, 2024.

The Program of Vocational School Computer Programming organised a technical trip to Başakşehir Data Center. With the participation of ISTTELKOM General Manager Melih Geçek and Deputy General Manager Taner Çıtak, students had the opportunity to get on-site information about data center operations, technological infrastructure, and critical digital services.

The ELT Club organized an introductory meeting on Tuesday, October 15th for members to get to know each other and learn about the club.

Istanbul Kültür University Alumni and Members Association (IKUMED) will organize the "IKU Alumni Day & Back to Kültür" event on Sunday, October 20, between 14.00-19.00, at the backyard of the Bakırköy Campus, Ataköy building.

In cooperation with IKU Youth Office and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, a conference titled "Entrepreneurship" will be organized to support students' career planning processes. The event, where PetChef Rafet İnce and Sapori Gıda CEO Ferda Ulaşoğlu will be speakers, will be held on Monday, October 21, at 13.00, at Önder Öztunalı Conference Hall in the Bakırköy Campus, Ataköy building.

In order to celebrate the sportive, social and cultural achievements of the students of the Faculty of Engineering, a “Faculty of Engineering Day” event will be held on Tuesday, October 22, at 13.30 on the ground floor terrace of the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy campus.

The ELT Club will organize a seminar titled "Language Test Success Strategies" to provide prospective teachers with general information about Testing and show students how their learning processes can be evaluated during the education and training process. The event, in which Lecturer Dr. Sinan Bataklar and Lecturer Hüseyin Can from the School of Foreign Languages will be the speakers, will be held on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 14.00 at the Z-16 conference hall on the Küçükçekmece campus.

In cooperation with the New Media and Communication Club and the Department of New Media and Communication, a talk titled “Sports Announcing in the Digital Age” will be organized to introduce the profession of sports announcer, which has transformed in the digital age, to students. The event, where Announcer & Presenter Burcu Turan will be a speaker, will be held on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 15.00, at AK ZA-2 lecture hall in the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy campus.

A talk titled “Sustainability in Businesses from a Behavioral Perspective” will be organized by the Vocational School to introduce the concept of family businesses and talk about the impact of ensuring employee and customer satisfaction on sustainability in such businesses. The event, where Prof. Dr. Mahmut Paksoy from the Department of Business Administration will be the speaker, will be held on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 15.00, in the lecture hall 1A01 in the İncirli building of the Bakırköy Campus.

The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences will organize an interview titled "Come and Meet Us to Prepare Yourself for the Workforce Model in the New World Order" in order to inform students about artificial intelligence. The event, where Dr. Esra Ergün (Principle Customer Success Account Manager, CSU) from Microsoft will be a speaker, will be held on Wednesday, October 23, at 14.00, at the Küçükçekmece Campus Conference Hall.

The “Republic Wind: 100 Years with Melodies” concert will be organized by the IKU Fine Arts Application and Research Center (GSUAM) to celebrate the polyphonic richness and cultural heritage of Turkish music in the more than 100-year history of our Republic. The concert, where leading artists of our country will come together and present a unique repertoire blending Turkish and Western music, will be held on Wednesday, October 23 at 19:00 at the Akıngüç Auditorium and Art Center.

The Leadership and Management Club will organise a discussion titled ‘’LEADERManager 2024‘’ where people who have gained a place in business life will talk about their own experiences on leadership. The event, where speakers will be experts in their fields, will be held on Thursday, October 24th, between 09:00 and 16:30 at the Akıngüç Auditorium and Art Center in the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy campus.

In cooperation with the Healthy Nutrition Club and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, a workshop titled “Cook, Taste, Learn” will be organised to support students in developing their vision. The workshop, which will be given by Specialist Dietitian Hüsniye Odabaş, will be held on Thursday, October 24 at 11:00 in the Bahçelievler campus, Block C Food Preparation Laboratory.

The Program of Guidance and Psychological Counselling will organise a meeting tea event on Thursday, October 24 at 12:00 on the 3rd floor multipurpose hall in the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy campus.

The Department of Cartoon and Animation, the Department of New Media and Communication, and the New Media and Communication Club will organise a technical trip to the 12th Animation International Film Festival to be held in Beyoğlu on Thursday, October 24.

“Life Development Trainings” will be organised by the Dean of Students Office and Kültür Point Professional Career Development Coordinatorship in order to show individuals what is wrong in their personal lives and to teach them new information. The training to be given by Psychologist Dr. Serap Duygulu under the title of "Technology Addiction or Competence?" will be held on Thursday, October 24th, between 16:00 and 19:00 at the Önder Öztunalı Conference Hall in the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy campus.

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering will organize a seminar titled "Energy Markets and Sustainability" to raise awareness among students. The event, where Tenera Energy Business Development Manager Ali Hakan Everekli will be the speaker, will be held on Friday, October 25 at 13:00 in Seminar Hall 2 in the Ataköy building of the Bakırköy campus.

The Dean of Students Office - Kültür Point Professional Career Development Coordinatorship will visit the National Independence and Founding Museum and Atatürk's Revolutions Museum on Friday, October 25th as part of the October 29th Republic Day.
