Prof. Dr. Akhan Akbulut: These Studies are Promising and Honourable for Our Country, and the Worlds of Health and Science Prof. Dr. Akhan Akbulut, Chairperson of the Selection Committee of the 2024 Akıngüç Award & Head of the Department of Computer Engineering, explained the process of 2024 Akıngüç Awards, which received 65 applications, as follows: “Dear guests, esteemed colleagues and dear students, today I share with you the happiness of coming together at this special award ceremony, which is named after the Akıngüç Family, and organized annually by the Rectorate of Istanbul Kültür University. The Akıngüç Award reflects the vision of our founders and the importance they attach to scientific research and aims to support studies that contribute to science and society every year. The topic of this year’s Akıngüç Award has been determined as “Artificial Intelligence Applications in Health Sciences”. The speed and solution-oriented approaches that artificial intelligence has provided to scientific research in recent years offer revolutionary developments at both academic and social levels. At 2024 Nobel Prizes, it was extremely inspiring for us to see the effects of artificial intelligence in both chemistry and physics. In chemistry, studies on AI-assisted protein design have demonstrated that AI plays a catalytic role in scientific discoveries. In physics, innovative approaches that artificial intelligence provide for modelling and simulation of complex physical systems were among the winning studies. These two examples clearly demonstrate how AI is playing a transformative role in scientific research. With the same momentum, AI is supporting similar breakthroughs in critical areas such as health sciences. This technology is opening new horizons in many areas such as early diagnosis of diseases, personalized treatments and the development of public health strategies. This year’s award process took on a special meaning due to the intense interest we received. This year, in addition to scientific research articles, we have expanded our range of evaluations by accepting project applications. In total, we evaluated 64 applications from 37 researchers. Each application was examined based on rigorous criteria such as the type of application, quality and impact, level of innovation and the applicant’s academic research profile. In addition, projects and articles were scored based on objective criteria such as funding sources, scientific and social impact, level of innovation, number of citations, impact factor and H-index of the applicants. The effort and creativity put into the works made the process both enlightening and challenging for us in terms of selection. I would like to thank our Selection Committee members who contributed to this process. In light of the evaluation criteria, I would like to share this year’s winners with you. The First Prize goes to Assoc. Prof. Ercüment Çiçek for his work titled ‘Privacy Challenges in Genomic Data Sharing: Signs and Solutions’. And the Honourable Mention Prize goes to Prof. Dr. Mustafa Alper Selver for his article titled ‘'CHAOS challenge - Combined (CT-MR) Healthy Abdominal Organ Segmentation’. We believe that both studies offer an innovative perspective in their respective fields and will make significant contributions to the academic literature. We sincerely congratulate them for inspiring us with their passion for science and their dedicated work. As I conclude my speech, I would like to thank everyone for your participation and support. I would like to remind you that our Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk emphasized that ‘knowledge and science’ is the path to be followed in order to ‘rise even above the level of contemporary civilization’, which he set as a goal for the Turkish Nation. We will continue to move forward in the light of science, inspired by the words of our leader: ‘The truest guides for everything in the world, for civilisation, for life, for success, are knowledge and science.’ Thank you.” |
