Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Architecture Department brings world-famous architects together with their students. Events will be held online, where American Architect & Academician Eric Owen Moss, Dean of the MIT School of Architecture and Planning & Curator of the 2020 Venice Biennale Hashim Sarkis and British Architect & Academician Ian Ritchie will meet with our students. Architect & Academician Eric Owen Moss will first appear in the webinar series that will last throughout the fall semester on Tuesday, October 27th at 20:00 with a speech titled "The Day the Sun Stood Still". In the second event to be held on Wednesday, November 18 at 20:00, MIT Architecture and Planning School Dean Hashim Sarkis will share his experiences with our students. In the last event of the series, Architect & Academician Ian Ritchie will give a talk titled "Light is the Opium of the Architect and Shadow Its Form" on Wednesday, December 9 at 20:00. American architect and academic Eric Owen Moss, who completed his undergraduate education at the University of California in Los Angeles, later studied architecture at the University of California School of Environmental Design and Harvard University Graduate Design School in Berkeley. Moss, who carried out many projects in the USA and various parts of the world with the company named Eric Owen Moss Architects in 1973, received the Academy Award of Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1999), the LA Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) (2001), He won many local, national and international design awards such as the Arpafil Award in Guadalajara (2019), the "New City of Nodes" Award (2020) by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the AIA Twenty-Five Years Award (2020). Moss, who has worked as an academic at many important universities such as Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Vienna University of Applied Arts and Copenhagen Royal Academy, was awarded the "Most Admired Educator Award" by the Design Futures Council in 2013, and in 2016, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded the "Educator of the year’’. Who is Hashim Sarkis? Architect & Academician Hashim Sarkis, who completed his undergraduate education in the Architecture Department and Fine Arts Department of the Rhode Island Design School, received his master's and doctorate degrees from the Department of Architecture at Harvard University. Sarkis, who founded Hashim Sarkis Studio in 1998, produced architectural and urban projects including affordable residences, houses, parks, corporate buildings, urban designs and city planning in offices in Boston and Beirut. The work of Hashim Sarkis Studio, which has received many awards with its projects including Byblos Town Hall and Courtower Houses, has been exhibited in many parts of the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the biennials in Venice, Rotterdam, Shenzhen / Hong Kong and Valparaiso . Hashim Sarkis, who previously taught at Harvard University, Rhode Island School of Design, Yale University, and the American University of Beirut, has been working as an academic and Dean at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since 2015. Sarkis, who has several books and articles on the history and theory of modern architecture, recently curated the 17th International Architecture Exhibition at the 2020 Venice Biennale, which was postponed to May 2021 due to the coronavirus. Who is Ian Ritchie? British Architect & Academician Ian Ritchie, who completed his undergraduate education in the Department of Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University, continued his education on urbanism in Oita-Osaka, Japan, and then graduated from PCL (now Westminster University). Ritchie, who founded Ian Ritchie Architects in 1981, received more than 100 awards nationally and internationally for his projects in the UK and Europe. Ritchie has chaired many international juries, including the RIBA Stirling Prize, the RIAS Doolan Prize, the Berlin Art Prize, the Czech Architecture Grand Prize, and the French government's "Nouveaux Jeunes Albums", and is the founding director of Rice Francis Ritchie, a Paris-based design engineering practice. Ian Ritchie, who previously worked at the Moscow School of Architecture, Leeds University, Royal Academy of Arts, is currently teaching at Liverpool University as an Honorary Visitor Professor. |
