Some of the universities that started the new academic year in the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic have started to use the blended education, also called hybrid education, model in which the online and face-to-face education model is applied together. With the model that started to be implemented under the name of Blended Learning (Karma Eğitim) at Istanbul Kültür University (IKU), students, if they want, continue their classes in the classroom or online.

Classes reorganized for live broadcast

Our Head of IKU Foreign Languages Department, Assist. Prof. Sinan Bataklar who talked about the model, which offers students the opportunity to be in a face-to-face learning environment and to work wherever and whenever they want, said, “Language education, in its own context, is a field that is learned through interaction and requires as much contact as possible. There is a platform we use for hybrid education. In our platform called CATS, we use many components from homework sharing to conversations, assessment and evaluation. We share files. We broadcast the lectures of all our students who attend the education to our students who cannot come here or choose not to come. All classes have also been reorganized for live broadcast. We try to provide a face-to-face education environment to our students as much as possible through the platform we use."

Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Architecture Department brings world-famous architects together with their students. Events will be held online, where American Architect & Academician Eric Owen Moss, Dean of the MIT School of Architecture and Planning & Curator of the 2020 Venice Biennale Hashim Sarkis and British Architect & Academician Ian Ritchie will meet with our students.

Architect & Academician Eric Owen Moss will first appear in the webinar series that will last throughout the fall semester on Tuesday, October 27th at 20:00 with a speech titled "The Day the Sun Stood Still". In the second event to be held on Wednesday, November 18 at 20:00, MIT Architecture and Planning School Dean Hashim Sarkis will share his experiences with our students. In the last event of the series, Architect & Academician Ian Ritchie will give a talk titled "Light is the Opium of the Architect and Shadow Its Form" on Wednesday, December 9 at 20:00.

Who is Eric Owen Moss?
American architect and academic Eric Owen Moss, who completed his undergraduate education at the University of California in Los Angeles, later studied architecture at the University of California School of Environmental Design and Harvard University Graduate Design School in Berkeley. Moss, who carried out many projects in the USA and various parts of the world with the company named Eric Owen Moss Architects in 1973, received the Academy Award of Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1999), the LA Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) (2001), He won many local, national and international design awards such as the Arpafil Award in Guadalajara (2019), the "New City of Nodes" Award (2020) by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the AIA Twenty-Five Years Award (2020). Moss, who has worked as an academic at many important universities such as Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Vienna University of Applied Arts and Copenhagen Royal Academy, was awarded the "Most Admired Educator Award" by the Design Futures Council in 2013, and in 2016, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded the "Educator of the year’’.

Who is Hashim Sarkis?
Architect & Academician Hashim Sarkis, who completed his undergraduate education in the Architecture Department and Fine Arts Department of the Rhode Island Design School, received his master's and doctorate degrees from the Department of Architecture at Harvard University. Sarkis, who founded Hashim Sarkis Studio in 1998, produced architectural and urban projects including affordable residences, houses, parks, corporate buildings, urban designs and city planning in offices in Boston and Beirut. The work of Hashim Sarkis Studio, which has received many awards with its projects including Byblos Town Hall and Courtower Houses, has been exhibited in many parts of the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the biennials in Venice, Rotterdam, Shenzhen / Hong Kong and Valparaiso . Hashim Sarkis, who previously taught at Harvard University, Rhode Island School of Design, Yale University, and the American University of Beirut, has been working as an academic and Dean at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since 2015. Sarkis, who has several books and articles on the history and theory of modern architecture, recently curated the 17th International Architecture Exhibition at the 2020 Venice Biennale, which was postponed to May 2021 due to the coronavirus.

Who is Ian Ritchie?
British Architect & Academician Ian Ritchie, who completed his undergraduate education in the Department of Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University, continued his education on urbanism in Oita-Osaka, Japan, and then graduated from PCL (now Westminster University). Ritchie, who founded Ian Ritchie Architects in 1981, received more than 100 awards nationally and internationally for his projects in the UK and Europe. Ritchie has chaired many international juries, including the RIBA Stirling Prize, the RIAS Doolan Prize, the Berlin Art Prize, the Czech Architecture Grand Prize, and the French government's "Nouveaux Jeunes Albums", and is the founding director of Rice Francis Ritchie, a Paris-based design engineering practice. Ian Ritchie, who previously worked at the Moscow School of Architecture, Leeds University, Royal Academy of Arts, is currently teaching at Liverpool University as an Honorary Visitor Professor.

“Job Belongs To Knower of It: Entrepreneurship Modes Webinar Series” that was organized by İstanbul Kültür University (IKU) Vocational School continued with the interview titled “Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation Applications in the Corporate World” held on October 1st 2020, Thursday. In the webinar that Esra Ergün, Microsoft Consultancy Services Account Delivery Executive, was the guest Lecturer Berrak Köten, Lecturer Dr. Barış Safran, Lecturer Burak Öçlü and Lecturer Gözde Bircan were the moderators.

Esra Ergün, a graduate of the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, started her speech by emphasizing the possibilities of technology, the importance of making use of the facilities it brings, and the necessity of being aware of the latest developments, even though we don’t have technical knowledge. Ergün who asked the questions "How can we live with technology, what are the negative and  positive effects?" made a comparison with the predictions in our dreams, took shape with examples from the world of cinema and art, and the artificial intelligence applications implemented today with futuristic studies. Ergün, who has been working in various fields such as software development, customer relationship management, project management, product management in various sectors for more than twenty years, emphasized that artificial intelligence is actually with us every day with the applications we constantly use such as suggestions in search engines and photo tags. 

Ergün who also questioned the benefits of artificial intelligence, said, "We make our lives easier, we are able to save time and shift our time to areas where we can be more productive." Ergün who stated that companies, besides these, utilize artificial intelligence in order to optimize, cost control, reach more customers faster and offer more options, said that organizations and societies that miss Industry 4.0 have no competitive chance and our potential as a country is high, but we still have a long way to go.

Esra Ergün who answered the questions of all participants with Lecturer Berrak  Köten, Lecturer Dr. Barış Safran, Lecturer Burak Öçlü and Lecturer Gözde Bircan stated that with the widespread use of artificial intelligence applications, they include a wide variety of disciplines. She also underlined the need to focus in line with the expertise and interests and then suggested our students to follow sectoral publications, business magazines and webinars in this field.

Elif Eda Güneş, one of our first year students in the Entrepreneurship Department, will share her successful life story, which was previously featured in the national and international press, the subject of the books and congratulated and appreciated by the state authorities, at TedxReset to be held on November 14.

After the general lecture on basic design criteria and induction method, individual studies were conducted on individual pieces at the “Be A Part of It” Workshop led by the academics of the Department of Architecture Assist. Prof. Esin Hasgül, Research Asst. Dilara Gür and Research Asst. Merve Aksoy Oral, on Saturday, October 17, 2020. Students were asked to design the parts of Moshe Safdie's Habitat 67 mass housing project, which was built as part of Expo 67, in three dimensions, using the materials they have. Discussions on holistic image, architectural representation and architecture were held with the productions.

Lecturer İrem Oran, Head of the IKU Vocational School Program of E-Commerce and Marketing, presented her paper titled “New Media Education and the Sector” at the “7th International Communication Days Communication Education in the Digital Age Symposium” held between 21-23 October.

Reyhan Göç, Zeynep Apari, Zeynep Simge Sedef and Zilan Timur, our 4th year students of the Department of Industrial Engineering, are accepted to the LC Waikiki Grad Global program. Our students will make their graduation projects in cooperation with LC Waikiki within the scope of the program.

The Department of Architecture of Istanbul Kültür University established an Advisory Board in order to obtain opinions from experts while the education program was being revised and held an online meeting between 18.00-20.00 on Wednesday, October 14, 2020.

The meeting that our Faculty of Architecture Dean Prof. Dr. Neslihan Dostoğlu was the moderator, attended by the academicians, professional architects, representatives of various institutions and organizations, graduates of IKU Architecture Department and their parents and academicians who constitute the Advisory Board. Some of the Advisory Board members who could not attend the meeting due to their excuses submitted their opinions in writing.

At the meeting; the quality of architectural education, educational model, collaborations, quality of academicians and graduate architects were discussed. Evaluations were made regarding the continuation of online undergraduate and graduate education. At the meeting, where the future of the architecture profession was discussed, original ideas came up not only about the education plan of IKU Architecture Department but also about the future of architectural education.

IKU Vocational School organized an e-seminar titled “ Planning My Future In The Tourism Sector” on Wednesday, October 8, 2020. In the event, where Hotech Customer Director Cenk Caner was the speaker, the expectations and demands regarding the changing tourism industry after the pandemic were discussed. During their 2-year education and training process and from the moment they step into the sector after graduation, it was discussed what awaits our students and how they can shape their careers.  Wyndham Destination Eastern Europe and Middle East Director Ali Eğilmez who participated in the event as a guest speaker shared his sectoral experiences with our students.

One of our academicians from the Faculty of Art and Design Department of Communication and Design Assit. Prof. Nagihan Çakar Bikiç's article titled "On the Production Process A Review of Short Filmmakers in Turkey: Crisis Communication" has been published at the international book titled ‘’Crisis and its Communication with Different Aspects’’

Ahmet Bikiç, a lecturer at the Faculty of Art and Design, Department of Communication and Design, made a speech at the “ITICAM International Trends and Issues in Communications Media Conferance” meeting held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus between 2-4 September 2020. In the Context of Techniques, he presented his paper entitled "Evaluation of the Movie Shattered Love and Dogs".

Lecturer Gökhan Kırbaç, Head of the IKU Vocational School Program of Air Logistics, presented his paper titled “Blockchain Technology for Supply Chain and Logistics: Building A House of Quality” at the conference held online by LODER and İstanbul Esenyurt University, titled “18. International Logistics and Supply Chain Congress (LM-SCM 2020)” held between 15-16 October, 2020.

Cambridge University Press has been presented its more than 430 peer-reviewed scientific journals and more than 37 thousand academic books to İstanbul Kültür University’s trial access until December 15 2020.

Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) will celebrate 29 October Republic Day with the events will be face-to-face and online.

The Department of Architecture will hold a "Geometry Workshop" via Cats on Saturday, October 24, between 09.00-18.00, in order to increase the creativity of first year students. Within the scope of the workshop, which will be given by our academicians Lecturer Dr. Suzan Sanlı Esin and Lecturer  Pelin Çetken, separate working groups will be organized for students of the English and Turkish Architecture Program.

Department of English Language and Literature will organize an online event titled "Meaning, Emotion and Aesthetics in Poetry Translation". Head of the Department of English Language and Literature Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Çelikel in Pamukkale University, one of the important academicians in his field, will be the guest of the event, which will be held on Monday, October 26 at 15:00 via CATS.

İKÜMED will organize a workshop titled "Dancing with the Basics of Movement" in order to raise a fundamental awareness that will change the relationship we establish with our bodies-movement in daily life and to share the refreshing effect of dance. Each phase of the workshop, which consists of four basic sections, will focus on a different part (or mechanism) of the body. The training, which will be given by the trainer Banu Açıkdeniz, will be carried out on Monday, October 26 at 16:00 on CATS Callaborate.

The Logistics Club will organize a webinar titled “Step by Step in Logistics” in order to increase the sectoral awareness of students. The event, where Horoz Logistics Distribution Operations Director Hacı Ali Eroğlu will be a speaker, will be held on Friday, October 30th between 15.30-16.30 via Adobe Connect Virtual Classroom Application.

Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) Student Life, Career and Graduate Counselling Unit (Kültür Point) will organize the "Philosophy of Mathematics and Thought Workshop" in order to discuss the ways of reaching the result without questioning the unthinkable. The training to be given by the Information & Management Consultant Numan Aydınoğlu will be held on Friday, October 30 between 16.00-18.00 on CATS.

I graduated from Istanbul Kültür University, Department of Business Administration. Then I continued my graduate education. I did my doctorate in business administration. In this process, I continue my academic career, which I started as a Research Assistant, in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Department of Business Administration.

During my undergraduate education, I decided to become an academician. I knew it was a tough road. With the support of my esteemed teacher, Prof. Dr. Tamer Koçel, I started working in the institution where I was a student. I worked in the Promotion Group Coordinator (now known as the Corporate Communication Department) of our university for 4 years. I have also been working in the Family Business and Entrepreneurship Application and Research Center since its establishment.
