Many of the ancient structures and artifacts in Anatolia are decorated with water motifs, to the waterway symbol, which is the reflection of this element that represents the feminine form. We come across pottery made of terracotta in the form of a zig-zag, with its reflection, which is popularly called meander. Meander, which is the symbol of the waterway, took its name from the Menderes (Meandrosmenader) River, which empties into the Aegean Sea. Therefore, the meander motif and the waterway symbol are in a symbolic unity with the dragon. The dragon dominates the air and water. It is depicted as a cloud in Anatolian civilizations. According to Anatolian legends and myths, the fight between the Dragon and the Phoenix brings fruitful rains. In the Seljuk caravanserais and fountains, the depiction of the dragon provides the transfer and depiction of eternal life, eternity and happiness. The dragon, which is stylized as a winged animal with lion's claws and its tail reminiscent of a snake, is considered to be a large snake, and is considered to be the keeper of treasures and mysteries. All of the symbols are the expression of impulses and the response of social needs. The places showing the water resources, one of the basic needs of the nomadic societies, are engraved in a cryptic way on the rocks, and petroglyphs showing the social life styles are frequently encountered. In all mythological works and legends, water reminds of rebirth, spiritual renewal and the continuity of life throughout life. The waterway symbol is the expression of fertility, nobility, wisdom, purity and virtue. It is also the most well-known symbol of purification. The waterway is the source of both life and death. |
