Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) 2022-2023 Academic Year Opening Ceremony

Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) 2022-2023 Academic Year Opening Ceremony was held at Akıngüç Auditorium and Art Center on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at 10:00 with the participation of Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Bahar Akıngüç Günver, our Rector Prof. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Akkartal, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Fadime Üney Yüksektepe, Prof. Dr. Gülce Öğrüç Ildız, academic-administrative staff and students. After the opening speeches of our Rector Prof. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Akkartal, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Dr.Bahar Akıngüç Günver and IKU Climate Ambassador & International Relations Master’s program student Selen Gezer, the guest speaker, who took the stage, Psychologist Prof. Dr. Acar Baltaş gave his speech titled “What I Learned From Life”.

Our Rector Prof. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Akkartal said that a new chapter has started in the lives of students who joined the Kültür family this year and thanked them for having trusted İstanbul Kültür University in this new journey of their lives. Prof. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Akkartal said, “Our university, which was established by the Kültür College Foundation, offers an alternative space of experience and dialogue in terms of scientific, cultural, artistic and sports, as well as education. In addition, the togetherness between learners and the faculty in Kültür arises from a free and participatory communication independent of any hierarchies.

The bond you form with your professors during studying here in Kültür will be a source of inspiration for you in your career and in your life. In addition to the educational experience offered in our 8 Faculties and 2 Vocational Schools, I recommend you to explore the opportunities offered by student clubs, our university's application and research centers that are precisely aligned with academic education. Spare some time for student clubs, sports and art activities, and volunteer work that will benefit the society and better life. While academic education is a very important topic among the privileges that university life offers you, broaden your toolbox in the field of research and social responsibility studies. Our Design Factory, Technology and Transfer Office, Europe and Career Workforce Unit, which started its activities in our Ataköy campus in 2022-2023, will be with you in your professional development. In your education life, besides your lectures I ask that you always be in contact with our departments in terms of life, career and business relations, and do not hesitate to ask for help in the search for a possible solution. The identity and development of foundation universities in Türkiye is still interpreted through the lens of private universities. Istanbul Kültür University, which we are proud to be a part of today, is a foundation university founded by a strong, well-established and qualified foundation with its values, the Kültür College Education Foundation. Our foundation will stand by the young people of our university to support and encourage research, success, and especially to support equality of opportunity in education. I welcome our new students who joined our Kültür family in the 2022-2023 Academic Year, our young people who successfully continue their university education by embracing the Kültür spirit, our valuable graduates and members, I wish the new semester to continue with health and success.”

Our Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Bahar Akıngüç Günver, on the other hand, started her speech by wishing the entire Kültür Family a healthy and successful year and said: “As Istanbul Kültür University, we left behind our 25th founding anniversary last academic year. 2 days ago we celebrated the 63rd anniversary of the establishment of Kültür College. To be the light that shines, love and family warmth, to defy the routine, to fight against bigotry and to be the source of Kemalist thought and enlightenment in education... Now that is the manifesto of Kültür.

The 2022-2023 Academic Year marks the 100th anniversary of a very meaningful historical Republic for us. Therefore, our excitement and our responsibility is mighty. You are the students of a quarter-century-old university founded by the Kültür College Foundation, which is independent and strong with its own resources and is powered by the principles of the Republic and Atatürk. In time you will more deeply feel the value that your university, whose ID you have today and whose degree you will have tomorrow, add to your life in the future. You, as the youngest members of the Kültür Family, which respects rights and freedoms, supports democratic thought and participation, and prioritizes independence in education and research, will always be supported by us with all our means during your student life here. Universities throughout their history, have been the places where people who defy the routine, who think differently, who are passionately dedicated to research, learning and questioning exist. They laid the groundwork for many scientific, social and economic developments that reshaped the history of the world in the mid and long term. The basis of this formation is the intellectual link between academics and students. A strong teacher-student relationship established at the university will empower you in many areas of your life, especially in your career journey. The intellectual bond, emotional partnership and professional exchange between the teacher and the student under the roof of the university holds even greater valuable in today’s world. Because we are living through a very challenging period. We are trying to keep the sense of hope, solidarity and civil struggle alive in the face of crises and risks. And that requires extraordinary physical and mental effort. The experience and wisdom of different age and profession groups is our greatest guide here. The 63-year-old Kültür College and our university, which are a source of inspiration for our Founding Foundation, are truly a School of Generations in terms of experience. You will also feel the Kültür of working together and the power of the spirit of solidarity at our university, which brings together all generations under the same roof. Here, you will experience that every person with their age, experience, memories, testimonies is a school of their own, and that university is a Kültür. I wish you all success in your university journey, and I thank you on behalf of our Founding Foundation Kültür College Foundation and our university for choosing Kültür for studying.”.

Dr. Bahar Akıngüç Günver, addressing the academic and administrative staff of Kültür Family, said: “Young people need your experiences about the country, the world and people more than ever. In today’s challenging conditions, the meaning of academic education for young people is also evolving. Yes, technology has come far. We are redefining the concepts of time and space. However, the place that communication, interaction, constructive dialogue and face-to-face relationships in human life holds is indisputable. The pandemic has been a great experience in this regard. You are a very valuable role model for our students. The importance of mentoring you will offer your students is beyond doubt. I have no doubt that you will with great care embrace your mentoring mission for our youth, as well as all your administrative and academic responsibilities. It is paramount that the intellectual bond you establish with young people is encouraging and inspiring. Exams are passed, projects are completed, lessons are held. The main thing is what we can offer besides all this. Friendship, guidance, sharing, solidarity, keeping the passion of seeking the truth alive and the excitement of learning and, perhaps most importantly, appreciating our values. In addition to all the academic knowledge we provide here, the most important value of Kültür is the awareness of being a family. Kültür is a family with all its values.”.

Our Chairperson of the Board of Trustees concluded her speech as follows: “Finally, a very valuable guest who adds value the sense of meaning of our new academic year opening ceremony and is a person we can call a friend of the university, is with us today. Prof. Dr. Acar Baltaş who used to be my teacher in the Guidance and Moral Culture course at Kültür College Secondary School, honoured our ceremony as our guest speaker today. My teacher, Acar Baltaş, taught me a great deal in terms of the importance of teacher-student relationship, being a role model and inspiring, most importantly, in terms of awareness of values. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my dear teacher Acar Baltaş for being here with us today. I wish the 2022-2023 Academic Year to continue healthy, peaceful and successful for all of us.”

While expressing everyone’s responsibilities by referring to the significance of climate crisis, IKU Climate Envoy Selen Gezer explained the national vision of Türkiye in the context of climate change with these words, “Türkiye’s national vision in the context of climate change is to have integrated the climate change policies with the development policy, spread energy efficiency, increased the use of clean and renewable energy sources and to be a country that can offer active participation in the climate change challenge within the framework of the special conditions and welfare with high living standards to all its citizens with low-carbon intensity.”

Gezer ended her speech with these words, “We need to improve by knowing the significance of nature for us, of which we took inspiration while developing, changing, and healing in every area of our lives, and blending it into our lifestyle for the continuity of our needs if necessary. In the process that the effects of climate crises will increase, Türkiye should build its policies and strategies with foresight while being aware of its advantageous position in the world. As the future of the country, we students have great duties and responsibilities.”

Prof. Dr. Acar Baltaş, who came forward after the opening speeches, stated that life is not all about happiness in his speech titled “What I Learned from Life” and that such a life will remain incomplete and without a story. Stating that happiness is confused with pleasure today, instant and temporary satisfactions are being pursued, Baltaş pointed out that a successful life can be built on endurance and self-efficacy, and that establishing a bond in social life and making people feel important is the basis of social relationships.

Also studying the concept of “self-confidence,” which he stated is extensively misused, Baltaş said that the belief that people are successful because they are self-confident is wrong, on the contrary, people are self-confident because they are successful.

Baltaş, who noted that this self-confidence should definitely be reciprocated, indicated that a baseless and unrequited, artificial self-confidence, an understanding that does not care about others is an indicator of sociopathy. Psychologist Prof. Dr. Acar Baltaş ended his words by stating that it is necessary to strive to be a good person.

Our Rector Prof. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Akkartal and our Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. Bahar Akıngüç Günver thanked Prof. Dr. Acar Baltaş for his inspiring speeches by presenting flowers and an Atatürk plate.

Istanbul Kültür University 2022-2023 Academic Year General Orientation Program

Istanbul Kültür University 2022-2023 Academic Year General Orientation Program was held on Wednesday, September 28, 2021, at 13:00 at Akıngüç Auditorium and Art Center. The program started with the message of our Rector Prof. Dr Hanife Öztürk Akkartal to our students. Our Rector gave the message that students will feel the privilege of studying and graduating from such a university for the rest of their lives, founded by a foundation that draws its strength and values from a deep-rooted past and has a love of people and country.

The program continued with the speeches “Meeting Life in Kültür” by Vice President of Student Life, Career and Alumni Counselling Doğa Kurtyiğit, "Germany Career and Workforce Program Introduction" by Lecturer Nilüfer Köker, "Design Factory Student Information" by Bengisu Ankara and Seda Vardar.

After the statements of our graduates Rauf Cihaner and Çağla Gül Bulut and our students Ezgi Topçu and Ömer Faruk Parlak, the program ended with an online impact assessment and an award-winning competition moderated by Mert Efe Anğın, Educational Events Planning and Organization Specialist Assistant.

"Student Clubs Orientation Days"

"Student Clubs Orientation Days" were organized by the Student Life Career and Alumni Counselling Unit (Kültür Point) in the backyard of Ataköy campus between 28-30 September 2022 for our newly registered students. During the orientation, which lasted for three days, 70 different clubs opened stands, both promoting and recruiting new members. For 3 days, approximately five thousand students became members of clubs that appeal to their interests.

On orientation days, companies such as Decathlon, MecFit, IBB Campus Solution Unit, IBB Spor Istanbul, Nescafe and Redbull took place as sponsors. Decathlon provided the students the opportunity to do sports with their playgrounds in the backyard. While IBB Spor Istanbul held a Zumba event with students on Thursday, September 29, MecFit and IMM Campus Solution Unit distributed products. Nescafe and Redbull distributed beverages throughout the day. IKU Orchestra and dance teams ensured that our students had a fun time during the Orientation Days.

Straw Wall Invention of Assist. Prof Ömer Saatcıoğlu From the Department of Architecture, Has Been Registered as an International Patent

The invention of Assist. Prof. N. Ömer Saatcıoğlu, Istanbul Kültür University Faculty of Architecture Department of Architecture academician, titled “A Straw Wall System Resistant to External Factors”, which he developed after his invention named “A Masonry Wall System” within the framework of “Straw-Bale Building Design” development studies in accordance with Turkish conditions, was also registered internationally on behalf of our university.

The purpose of the invention is to develop a straw wall system suitable for Turkish conditions. The next stage of the invention developed to create a conveyor system from a hay bale is the integration of the “Breathing Wall” system, which has been registered nationally and of which the international patent process is ongoing. Thus, it is aimed to increase the sustainability potential of the straw wall by designing a holistic and energy-efficient building wall that comprises conveyor and energy systems.

Assist. Prof. N. Ömer Saatcıoğlu has six national and two international patents, of which he is the inventor, and which are registered on behalf of Istanbul Kültür University.

New Issue of Journal of Education for Life Has Been Published!

Dear researchers,

The new issue of the Journal of Education for Life, which has been contributing to the field of educational sciences for 36 years, has been published. There are research and review articles from preschool to higher education, from non-formal to formal education in this new issue. This issue of the Journal of Education for Life which brings together theory and practice in education also includes research from different universities in Türkiye. These researches are fully accessible to everyone due to an open access policy.

You are welcome to read the articles published in this issue, share them with your colleagues and send the research that you are currently carrying out to the Journal of Education for Life.

Our Campuses were Decontaminated by ULV System

Within COVID-19 measures, physically used academic/administrative staff offices, communal areas, classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, and service vehicles in Ataköy, Şirinevler, Basın Ekspres, and Incirli Campuses were decontaminated against viruses by ULV system and Directorate of Support Services on Saturday, September 24, 2022.

U.L.V. (Ultra Low Volume) System;

It is an aerosol mist production system created by extremely fine spraying technique. The solution used is divided into particles so that it stays in the air for a long time, extending the contact time with surfaces, thereby providing the most effective and economical fight against viruses with the least active substance.

Assist. Prof. Alp Ayan, Res. Assist. Dr. Sinan Meriç and Res. Assist. Tamer Gümüş Participated in the “IV BALKAN AGRICULTURAL CONGRESS”

Assist. Prof. Alp Ayan, Res. Assist. Dr. Sinan Meriç and Res. Assist. Tamer, who are academicians of IKU Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MOBIGEN), presented the outcomes of their joint work by participating in the international “IV Balkan Agricultural Congress,” which was held on August 31- September 3, 2022, by Trakya University. In the congress, Assist. Prof Alp Ayan performed his oral presentation titled “RNA Sequencing Analysis of Salt and Drought Tolerance in Gamma-induced Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr) Mutants.”

Security Staff Training

For our security staff working on our campuses, a training was held on Saturday, September 24, by the Directorate of Support Services. Our Ataköy Campus hosted the training which was held in three sessions on the topics of "Public Relations and Communication", "Principles of Intervention in Social Events", "Mass Psychology" and "Anger Management and Stress Management."

The Academic Staff of the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Presented a Paper at the ESMAC Congress

The academic staff of the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation participated in “European Society for Movement Analysis in Adults and Children (ESMAC)” congress, held in Dublin, capital of Ireland, on September 19-24, 2022.

At the congress, poster papers titled “The relationship between selective motor control, trunk impairment, and gait in children with cerebral palsy”, “The effects of hypermobility on the kinematics of the lower extremity during sit-to-stand (STS) activity: a plot study”, “Acute effect of increased pelvic anterior tilt on lower extremity kinematics during walking unhealthy individuals: pilot study”, "A validation of tibio-femoral joint model: quantitative comparison of experimental and model response kinematics” and verbal notice titled “The effect of flexible pes planus on lower extremity kinematics during vertical high jump in volleyball players,” all of which containing the final year graduation project thesis and being completed at IKU-HAM, were presented. Papers were published in the 97th issue of the journal “Gait and Posture (Q1)” September 2022 edition.

Artificial Intelligence and Extended Reality High School Architectural Concept Design Marathon

We are expecting the participation of Department of Architecture and Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design to the Design Marathon event to be held on October 8-9, 2022, by the cooperation of Başakşehir Living Lab, Başakşehir District National Education Directorate, Istanbul Kültür University Faculty of Architecture, Başakşehir University Faculty of Architecture and Design and Istanbul Design Factory.

One of the academicians of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MOBIGEN), Assist. Prof. Özge Rencüzoğulları and Assist. Prof. Pelin Özparmak Kılbaş attended the “I. International Advances in Molecular Biology Congress” as invited speakers. Our professors presented the results of their studies in the field of Molecular Biology of Cancer at the congress.

Lecturer Yakup Türkdil Participated in “Teaching Turkish in Türkiye and in the World: Applications, Developments, Recommendations Workshop”

Lecturer Dr. Yakup Türkdil, Istanbul Kültür University Department of Turkish Language academician, participated in “Teaching Turkish in Türkiye and in the World: Applications, Developments, Recommendations Workshop,” held in Bursa on September 26-29, 2022, by Ministry of Education Turkish and Language Education Research and Development Center of the Board of Education in cooperation with Turkish Language Association (TDK,) Turkish Maarif Foundation, Yunus Emre Institute, and Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB.)

In the workshop, which topics of teaching of Turkish; as a native language and a foreign language, to the bilinguals and Turkish lineages were discussed, from many universities, academicians, practitioners, and representatives of relevant institutions took part.

Seminar of "Occupational Health and Laboratory Biosafety Rules"

A detailed information seminar on "Occupational Health and Laboratory Biosafety Rules" was held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, for students working in the research laboratory of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MOBIGEN). At the seminar given by IKU Occupational Health and Safety Specialist Cumhur Gültekin and one of the academicians in MOBIGEN Res. Assist. Sinan Meriç, the working conditions of research laboratories and the rules to be observed while working in the laboratory environment were explained in detail.

EVENTS OF THE WEEK

"You in Me Workshop"

“You in Me Workshop" will be organized by the Student Life Career and Alumni Advisory Unit (Kültür Point) to recognize chemical and behavioural addictions, prevent risky behaviours, improve self-confidence by enabling students to know themselves, and increase their empathy and saying no skills. The training, which will be given by psychologist Aysu Çelenoğlu, will be held on Monday, October 3, between 13.00-16.00 in the 2nd floor multi-purpose hall.

Çobanisa Primary School Improvement Project Presentation and Ceremony of Presentment of Certificates of Appreciation

The presentation of the Isparta Çobanisa Primary School improvement project, which was carried out by the Department of Architecture as part of the social responsibility project, and the presentment of the certificates of appreciation, will be held on Monday, October 3, between 13.00-18.00 at the Akıngüç Auditorium and Art Center.

"Turkish Sign Language Education"

Kültür Point will organize “Turkish Sign Language Education” in order to raise awareness about the deaf and hearing impaired in the society and to contribute to the personal and professional development of our students. The training, which will be given by trainer Eser Dalyan, will be held on October 3-4, 2022, between 15.00-18.00 in the 1st floor multi-purpose hall.

Orientation for the Department of International Trade and Finance

The Department of International Trade and Finance will organize an orientation program for newly registered students in the 2022-2023 Academic Year on Tuesday, October 4, between 11:00 and 14:00 at the Basın Ekspres campus.

Orientation Programs for the Department of Foreign Languages

Within the scope of Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) 2022-2023 Academic Year General Orientation Program, "Orientation Programs for the Department of Foreign Languages" will be held on Tuesday, October 4th. The program, which will be held under the titles of “Orientation for the Department of Foreign Language” and "Orientation for the Department of International Students", will be hosted by Akıngüç Auditorium and Art Center in Ataköy Campus in two sessions between 14.00-16.00 and 16.00-17.00.

Orientation Presentation for the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design

The Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design will make a presentation at the Önder Öztunalı Conference Hall on Wednesday, October 5, between 10.00-13.00 in order to introduce the department to the students enrolled in our university in the 2022-2023 Academic Year.

First Date Event with EMK

The Industrial Engineering Club (EMK) will organize a "First Date with EMK" event on Wednesday, October 5, between 14.00 and 16.00, at Yenibosna Saray Muhallebicisi, in order for the members to unite with each other.

Molecular Biology and Genetics Club Acquaintance Meeting

Molecular Biology and Genetics Club will organize an introductory meeting for the members to socialize with each other. The event, in which one of our graduates, Sibel Pınar Odabaş, will be the speaker, will be held on Wednesday, October 5, between 17.00-18.30. at Dr. Atilla Özalpan Seminar Hall.

"On Architecture Club Acquaintance Meeting and Architecture with Mahmut Özgül"

The Architecture Club will organize an event titled "On Architecture Club Acquaintance Meeting and Architecture with Mahmut Özgül" in order to enable members to socialize with each other and to inform students about the activities to be held during the term. The event, where Architect Mahmut Özgül will talk about his experiences as a speaker, will be held on Thursday, October 6 between 15.00-18.00 at Önder Öztunalı Conference Hall.

"Diction and Etiquette Training"

Kültür Point will organize the "Diction and Etiquette Training" in order to teach the rules of etiquette and courtesy that they can apply in all areas of life, by ensuring that the participants can speak Turkish effectively. The training, which will be given by Özcan Tekdemir, will be held on Friday, October 7, between 15.00-18.00, at the Önder Öztunalı Conference Hall.
