One of the most controversial issues as a result of the spread of COVID19 worldwide was the use of masks. At the beginning of the epidemic, only those who are sick should use the mask, other people do not need to use it, with the latest decisions turned into obligatory for everyone to use in health institutions, markets and public transportation. In fact, there is no difference between the two discourses. At the beginning of the global epidemic, the number of infected people and patients was low. For this reason, it is recommended that the mask be used only by suspicious and infected people. Due to the rapid spread of the epidemic all over the world and in our country, the use of masks in an uncontrolled manner gradually increased in the society. As a result, mask prices started to increase and even run out so quickly. However, when the N95, FFP2 / FFP3, gas, dust, surgical, washable masks were mentioned, in the end we have lost the track. On top of that, in some areas, the necessity of masks and the announcement that a certain number of masks will be provided to people aged 20-65 by the state brought the discussions as to why the mask was not compulsory before. 30% of those infected with the COVID-19 virus, namely infected, remain asymptomatic and 40-50% with mild symptoms. 20% of patients experience symptoms disturbing them and apply to family physicians or hospitals. The diagnosis of infection in all of our provinces, even from almost all of our districts, has shown that the infection has become widespread and people who do not have normal or severe complaints exist in the society. That is why, as in the first discourse, the use of masks has been made compulsory in order to accept everyone as infected and to prevent transmission to other people. In other words, there is no change in the necessity of using a mask, and it is not known who is infected, who is sick and who is healthy due to the spread of the infection. Therefore, it is necessary to use masks in community living areas. Let's give some information about the use of masks in terms of our society. For people who have not used the mask before, it is not easy to use the mask for reasons such as breathing, talking, misting the glasses for those with glasses. When people who are not not in the habit of the mask start using a mask, hands become dirty as a result of movements such as touching, playing, correcting their masks with their hands, and these hands can spread many bacteria and viruses, especially this virus. Using a mask does not protect the noninfected one (its protection is very low). The mask prevents the infected person from spreading the virus and infecting others. The mask will not protect you if you are not infected, that is, if you have not received the virus. For this reason, it is not correct to think like I can wear my mask and go out to the street, go shopping, and travel. Do not be present in health institutions and organizations, public transportation, market and other public life areas unless necessary, use masks to be given to you if you need to be present. Please don't play the masks with your hands. The mask should be used for a maximum of 3-4 hours. After use, hold the auricles and throw them into the appropriate waste bin. And wash your hands by rubbing them with soapy water. Remember… It's not a mask, it protects you to stay at home… Source: HASUDER Prepared by: Prof. Dr. Murat Topbaş (Karadeniz Technical University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Public Health) |
