What is Nurses Day?
Nursing is a social profession that protects and improves health and provides a humane and holistic approach to patient care. The history of patient care goes back to ancient times. During the Crimean War, which dates back to 1853-1856, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who was called the "woman with the lamp" in Istanbul and who established the first modern nursing in our country, is celebrated as "Nurses' Day" in the world and in our country. There is a museum in her name in Selimiye Barracks in Istanbul. The International Council of Nurses celebrates "Nurses' Day" with a different theme every year. Based on the global pandemic, the Council determined its theme for 2022 as “Nurses: A Pioneering Voice – Invest in Nursing to Secure Global Health & Respect Their Rights”. This theme highlights the importance of focusing on the need to protect, support and invest in the nursing profession to strengthen health systems.
