59th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women

Prof. Dr. Mensur Akgün and Dr. Sylvia Tiryaki of Global Political Trends (GPoT) Center attended the fifty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 9 to 20 March 2015. Representatives of Member States , UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs)  from all regions of the world attend the session.

Rethinking Cyprus in the Light of Recent Developments

Assist. Prof. Sylvia Tiryaki, Deputy Director of Global Political Trends (GPoT) Center, delivered a speech entitled “Rethinking Cyprus in the Light of Recent Developments” at Yildiz Technical University. The speech took place within the framework of the Roundtable Discussions on International Politics on March 16, 2015.

Tiryaki’s speech was held with the participation of students and academicians, and followed by a vivid discussion regarding the past and the present of the years-long Cyprus question.

Panel discussion with representatives of Armenian Diaspora - Istanbul Kültür University

GPoT Center staff attended the panel discussion titled “Armenian Diaspora-Turkey Relations”, which was jointly organized by the International Relations Department of Istanbul Kültür University (IKU) and the Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV)

The event took place on March 5, 2015 on the premises of Istanbul Kültür University and was attended by academicians, researchers, civil society activists, and IKU students.

The wave of extremism which has engulfed Iraq, Syria and more broadly, the Middle East is characterized by military, political, social, and religious dimensions. And while all these factors coincide, none of them solely accounts for the ongoing crisis.

GPoT Center's Omar Sheira wins Max van der Stoel Human Rights Award 2014

The prize for best Master’s thesis went to Omar Sheira, who studied at Tilburg University. He examined the necessary preconditions for building an environment which can foster human rights implementation and enforcement in Egypt.

On the occasion of World Human Rights Day on December 10th, the Max van der Stoel Human Rights Awards 2014 have been awarded to two PhD theses and one Master’s thesis at Tilburg University. The jury assessed eleven nominations, from the universities of Tilburg, Utrecht, Leiden, Maastricht, Groningen, and Amsterdam, both VU and UvA.

Policy Dilalogue Meetings in Canada

Global Political Trends Center’s (GPoT) Director Prof. Mensur Akgün and Deputy Director Sylvia Tiryaki, together with Assoc. Prof. Mesut Özcan, Chairman of the Strategic Research Center (SAM) of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, and Mr. Ufuk Ulutaş, Director of the Foreign Policy Studies of the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA) held a series of meetings in Canada between 13-19 November 2014.

Turkey has created its new export brand. It was launched by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), on September 28, 2014. The logo has a sublime turquoise colour and is softly curved. It is a sumbol of harmony and joy, inviting all to explore the rivers, seashores, flowery meadows, and mountainous landscapes of Turkey, smiling from within.
